Live Baccarat How to Play — Complete Guide for African Players 2026
Live baccarat is one of the most popular live casino games at international platforms available to African players. It is also one of the simplest table games to play — after placing your initial bet, the dealer handles everything according to fixed rules and the outcome is determined automatically. No strategy knowledge is required to enjoy the game.
The Basic Objective
In baccarat, two hands are dealt — the Player hand and the Banker hand. Your goal is to bet on which hand will have a total closer to nine. You have three betting options: Player, Banker, or Tie. After placing your bet, you simply watch the dealer complete the hand. No further input from you is required — this is what makes baccarat so accessible for beginners.
Card Values
Aces are worth one point. Cards two through nine are worth their face value. Tens, jacks, queens, and kings are all worth zero points. When a hand total exceeds nine, only the second digit counts. A seven and an eight total fifteen, which counts as five in baccarat. A nine and a six also total fifteen, which also counts as five.
The Drawing Rules
Both the Player and Banker start with two cards each. A natural occurs when either hand totals eight or nine with the first two cards — in this case no more cards are drawn and the higher total wins. If no natural occurs, drawing rules apply: the Player draws a third card if their total is zero through five, and stands on six or seven. The Banker drawing rules are more complex and depend on both the Banker total and whether the Player drew a third card. You do not need to know these rules in detail — the dealer applies them automatically without any input from you.
The Three Bets and House Edge
The Player bet pays 1:1 and has a house edge of approximately 1.24%. The Banker bet pays 1:1 minus a 5% commission on wins, with a house edge of approximately 1.06% — making it the best bet at the baccarat table. The Tie bet pays 8:1 at most tables but carries a house edge of approximately 14.4% — one of the highest of any standard casino bet. The Tie bet should be avoided entirely.
The Banker bet wins slightly more often than the Player bet due to the drawing rules, which is why a 5% commission is applied to Banker wins. Even after the commission, the Banker bet remains the best option at the table.
Side Bets — Avoid Them
Many live baccarat tables offer side bets such as Player Pair, Banker Pair, and Perfect Pair. These pay at attractive odds but carry house edges of 10-15% or more. If minimising the house advantage and extending your playtime is your goal, avoid all side bets.
Practical Tips for Beginners
Bet Banker as your default — it has the lowest house edge of any main baccarat bet. Never bet Tie — the house edge is far too high. Ignore all side bets. Check the table minimum before joining — live baccarat tables often have higher minimums than slot games. Set a session budget and stop when you reach it.
