NHL Betting Picks — March 9, 2026 | Sunday Slate Guide for Canadian Bettors

Seven games today and honestly? A couple of them are genuinely interesting. The kind where you actually want to have something riding on it before puck drop. Let me break down what I'm looking at, what I'm skipping, and the one parlay that might be a terrible idea but I'm probably doing anyway.

Here's the whole day in one shot. Odds are estimated based on Betway Canada and bet365 lines — always double-check before you lock anything in.

Lightning vs Sabres — This Is The Game of the Night

Why This One Matters So Much Right Now

Buffalo sitting at 82 points. Tampa at 80. Both chasing Atlantic Division positioning with the playoffs creeping closer every week. Win tonight and you swing four points on a direct conference rival. Lose and suddenly the math gets uncomfortable.

That's the context. And it matters because both teams know exactly what's at stake here, which changes how they play.

Recent Form and Trends

Buffalo has been one of the better home teams in the league lately. Their road record over the last nine games is absurd — 8-1 SU. Away from home they're beating people, so imagine what they do when the crowd at KeyBank Center is loud and they need the points.

Tampa has been solid all season. 80 points doesn't happen by accident. They've won five of their last seven and the offense has been clicking. This isn't a walkover.

But. Home ice, crowd noise, playoff stakes, and Buffalo's current form all pointing the same direction.

My Pick

Buffalo Moneyline @ -130 — main pick, medium stake.

If you want more juice, Sabres -1.5 puckline @ +185 is genuinely interesting if you think Buffalo comes out flying. Riskier obviously, but if they score first and Tampa starts pressing... these things have a way of snowballing.

I'm splitting — ML as the anchor, small side bet on the puckline.

Bruins @ Penguins — Two Desperate Teams Playing Careful Hockey

The Situation

Pittsburgh at 75 points, WC2, Malkin out. Boston also at 75 points fighting for the same wildcard spot. Eugh. This is the kind of game where both coaches are screaming "protect the lead" before there even IS a lead.

I had the Bruins on Wednesday and watched them fall apart in the third period. Just... disappeared. So I'm not going heavy on either team outright today. Once bitten and all that.

Trends Worth Noting

Under in 4 of Pittsburgh's last 5 games. Under in 6 of Boston's last 7 against Metropolitan Division opponents. Both teams playing with anxiety rather than confidence right now.

Desperate playoff-race games between evenly matched teams tend to grind. Neither side wants to be the one that gave up the soft goal that costs them two points.

My Pick

Under 5.5 @ -115 — the data and the narrative point the same way here.

Oilers @ Golden Knights — The Late Night Four-Pointer

Pacific Division Stakes

Edmonton 68 points. Vegas 72 points. Both in the middle of a tight Pacific Division race with about 20 games left. This is one of those games that looks like a regular-season matchup but feels like a playoff game inside the locker room.

Vegas at home is always a factor. T-Mobile Arena crowd is real. Golden Knights 6-3 SU in their last 9 home games. That's a meaningful edge.

Then again — McDavid. When he decides a game matters, the Oilers just become a different team. I've bet against him before and immediately regretted it. Still regret it actually.

My Pick

Under 5.5 @ -120 — high-stakes divisional games in March tend to be tight, defensive, grinding affairs. Both goalies should be locked in. I'm not chasing goals here.

If you want a small side play, Oilers +1.5 puckline @ +115 is decent value. Means Edmonton either wins outright OR loses by one — both of which are very realistic outcomes in a game this tight.

Colorado @ Minnesota — Look, It's Just Colorado

H3: MacKinnon Has 41 Goals. That's the whole analysis.

Colorado at 93 points, Central Division leaders, MacKinnon absolutely cooking. Minnesota is good — 84 points, legitimate team — but they're on the road in Denver and the Avalanche are just rolling right now.

Colorado ML is going to be short. Like -200 short. Not great value. I'd cap any bet here at a small amount purely because the price doesn't excite me. But if you're building a parlay and need a "safe" leg, this is probably it.

The 3-Leg Parlay I'm Thinking About

Look, I know. Parlays are how sportsbooks pay for their offices. I know this. And yet.

Leg Pick Est. Odds Lightning @ Sabres Buffalo ML -130 Bruins @ Penguins Under 5.5 -115 Oilers @ Golden Knights Under 5.5 -120 Combined Parlay~+290

Twenty-five bucks on that returns around $97 if all three hit. Is it smart? Probably not. Is it making tonight's games infinitely more watchable? Absolutely yes.

Small stakes only. I learned this the hard way — had a three-legger two weeks ago, first two legs hit clean, third game went to a shootout and I lost on the most preventable outcome imaginable. Sat there at midnight staring at my phone like an idiot. So yeah. Fun money only on parlays.

Personally I use bet365 for live betting during games. Their live interface updates fast and doesn't lag when you're trying to grab a line mid-period. Betway for pre-game moneylines because their NHL pricing is consistently competitive. That's just my setup.
